When compared apples to apples, on-premisis signage has the lowest effective “CPM”, or cost-per-impression, than any other method of advertising.  Cheaper than magazines, newsletters, newspapers, television, and radio.  That said, the traditional barrier that holds small businesses back is that big outdoor signage has a large upfront cost associated with it.

One way to get around that is to leverage the power of lighted window signs.   Since they are installed indoors, and have no special licensing, ordinance, electrical, or other requirements, the initial investment is much, much, lower…just a few hundred dollars.   And, if you choose the right type, they can generate almost the same amount of attention as an ordinary outdoor sign.

The two most popular, and most effective types of indoor custom signs are neon and LED.  Both attract attention, and both are relatively low in cost.  There are some differences, however:

Custom LED Signs:

- Lower Operating Costs.  They typically consume 5-10 watts of electricity, versus 60-100 for a similarly sized neon sign.

- Less Fragile: LED signs typically come with a sturdy plastic enclosure, and there’s no glass to break.

Custom Neon Signs:

- Usually Brighter: Since the letters are made with a continuous glass tube, instead of LED “dots”, there’s more lighted surface to form the letters

- A more classic, nostalgic look.  Some people find LED signs a little “techy”, or even “tacky”.  Neon has a classic, retro look that enhances just about any store.

With starting prices of around $250, there’s really no reason to forgo the benefits of a custom window sign.  You can advertise and strengthen your brand, or push a call to action with bright lights that will get noticed…and you won’t break the bank.
